Go home from work on time
Don’t let work follow you home
We are constantly being encouraged to “prioritise”. But what does it really mean and how do we do it in our busy lives?
Everything is an opportunity cost – doing one thing means not doing something else.
Every time you are about to start a new task, ask yourself “What would happen if I did not do this?
If I say ‘yes’ to this, what do I have to say ‘no’ to?
Saying yes to one person or task often means saying no to another.
Choose the task that is going to give you the best outcome.
In short, spend your time and energy doing what matters:
- the tasks that make a difference
- the tasks that move you in the right direction
- the activities that get you cheering when you accomplish them
- the jobs that are ‘goal-kickers’
- the things you do that leave you feeling good
- the activities that make you feel that was a worthwhile way to spend your time.
And yes there are lots of things on our plate, but focus on the things that matter because that is the best use of your (limited) time and energy.
The other things? See them as non-essentials. Just do them quickly and get them off your plate or even don’t do them.
“You have more to do than you can possibly do. You just need to feel good about your choices.” David Allen
“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is a nobler art of leaving things undone… The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.” Lin YiTang
